This photo was taken in Lancaster, CA. The bird was sitting on a power
pole as I drove by. While taking pictures it took off and circled over me several
times before flying off. It took some research but I found that these birds do
not gain their characteristic red tail feathers until they are mature.

This bird had been hanging around the runoff pond next to the school for several weeks.
At the time of the photo it was standing on the wall around the pond then took off
when the children were released from their classes.
This picture was selected because it showed the transition between standing
